University releases annual salary report

Faculty and staff salaries at the U-M Ann Arbor campus grew at a modest pace in 2010-11, according to data released Dec. 20 by the university.

Faculty salaries increased, on average, 2.6 percent.

Salary increases for campus staff averaged 2.3 percent.

“It is important that we work hard to retain our high-performing and internationally competitive faculty and staff members,” says Phil Hanlon, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs.

“The budget choices we make are tied to important principles, including maintaining and enhancing our ability to contribute to the state and the region. We continue to make reasonable investments in our extraordinary faculty and staff so we can fulfill this responsibility,” Hanlon says.

Staff salary increases for the Hospital and Health Centers increased 3.3 percent in 2010-2011; in the previous year, staff did not receive an increase to their base salary, although most received a lump sum amount.

“These staff have helped us maintain stable financial health despite a highly challenging health care environment over the past two years,” says Doug Strong, chief executive officer of the Hospitals and Health Centers unit of the U-M Health System. The UMHHC is financially self-sustaining.

The staff averages exclude employees represented by a union.

Merit salary increases for executive officers and academic deans averaged 3 percent.

The 2010-11 Faculty and Staff Salary Disclosure Report now is available on the Human Resources website at hr.umich.edu/hrris/reports/standard.html#ASDR. The report also will be available at many libraries on campus, as well as the Ann Arbor District Library.
