“With more than 20 years of higher education experience in accounting, financial systems and business intelligence, and a commitment to process improvement, staff development and customer service, Thom is well positioned to lead Sponsored Programs,” says Cheryl Soper, the university’s controller and director of financial operations.

The Sponsored Programs area manages the post-award activities of the university’s research enterprise and other sponsored activities to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws, and sponsor regulations. In fiscal year 2010, the university received nearly $1 billion in revenues from various government agencies and private sources for sponsored programs.

Madden is a frequent presenter at Research Administrators Network meetings and a member of the Sponsored Projects Advisory Team dedicated to the evaluation, resolution and communication of issues affecting the U-M research community. He also has held leadership roles for several major universitywide initiatives, including Concur, Real-Time Financials and M-Reports, where he helped develop and refine the content for the Web-based sponsored research management reports. Madden has a Bachelor of Arts in accounting from UM-Dearborn and an MBA from Eastern Michigan University.

“Over the years, Thom has worked closely with the university’s research and financial administrators to improve sponsored project reconciliation and management reporting,” Soper says. “He began his career in Financial Operations and I’m pleased that he is once again part of our organization.”
