The academic year 1893-94 was proclaimed as the most progressive year thus far for the University Musical Society and the two organizations it sustained, the Choral Union and the University School of Music. With 280 voices, the Choral Union was thought to be the largest student chorus in the world, and its successful performance in December of Handel’s “Messiah” was identified as a season highlight. The Choral Union’s performance in May on campus of Verdi’s “Manzoni Requiem” with the Boston Festival Orchestra also was identified as a highlight. In its second year, enrollment in the School of Music was 147. — The University Record
