U-M collected 1,356 units of blood from students, faculty and staff during the Big Ten Blood Drive challenge, meeting 105 percent of its goal.
Penn State collected the largest amount of blood, with 1,536 units; U-M rival The Ohio State University collected 1,132 units of blood, according to the American Red Cross.
“The Big Ten universities really stepped up to support the American Red Cross and the patients who rely on blood transfusions,” says Rodney Wilson, communications manager of Central Ohio Blood Services Region. “This was just the first year of the challenge and I hope that it continues to grow in the years to come.”
Other universities participating in the challenge include Michigan State University, the University of Wisconsin, Indiana University, the University of Illinois, Purdue University, the University of Minnesota, Northwestern University and the University of Iowa.
In all, students, faculty and staff from the 11 universities donated 7,622 pints of blood, exceeding the goal of 7,500 donations, American Red Cross officials say.
