Michigan Radio named Public Radio Station of the Year

The university’s public radio service, Michigan Radio, has been named Public Radio Station of the Year for 2009 by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters (MAB).

This is the eighth time in nine years that Michigan Radio has been named Public Radio Station of the Year. The award was announced last week at the MAB annual Great Lakes Broadcasting Conference in Lansing.

The Station of the Year recognition is based on total points that a station receives in various judging categories. Michigan Radio was recognized as Station of the Year in Group 2, which is for public radio stations with more than a $2 million budget.

In addition to the Station of the Year award, Michigan Radio received a total of 14 Broadcast Excellence Awards, including eight Best in Category awards and six Merit Awards, in the following categories:

Best in Category

Hard News and Current Events Story: “Overqualified Applicants.” Mini-Documentary or Series: “Facing the Mortgage Crisis.” Newscast: Dec. 10, 2009. News Special or Public Affairs Program: “Remaking Michigan” Call-In Show. Special Interest and Cultural Programming: “Generation Y Michigan.” Membership Appeal: “Don’t Wait for the Senate.” Community Involvement and Marketing Materials and Promos: “Facing the Mortgage Crisis.”

Merit Award

Hard News and Current Events Story: “Highland Park Unemployment.” Mini-Documentary or Series: “Cody Chronicles.” Newscast: Nov. 11, 2009. News Special or Public Affairs Program: “Generation Y Michigan” Call-In Show. Membership Appeal: “Facing the Mortgage Crisis.” Marketing Materials and Promos: Sounds of the State.

The Broadcast Excellence Awards program recognizes outstanding achievement in broadcasting by Michigan radio and television stations each year. All 2,009 entries aired between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2009.

Michigan Radio is an NPR news station, and the state’s most listened-to public radio service, attracting nearly 500,000 listeners each week across the southern half of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. Michigan Radio serves Detroit and southeast Michigan at 91.7 FM, west Michigan at 104.1 FM and 91.1 FM in the Flint area.
