Gerard Voland has accepted the position of provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at UM-Flint, pending approval by the Board of Regents. He also will hold the title of professor of engineering within the College of Arts and Sciences.

Voland currently is dean of the College of Engineering, Technology and Computer Science, director of the Center for Industrial Innovation and Design, and professor of mechanical engineering at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. Prior to that, he served from 1999-2003 as the associate vice president for undergraduate education and dean of the Undergraduate College at the Illinois Institute of Technology, and worked for more than 20 years in a variety of roles at Northeastern University.
Voland earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees in physics from the University of California-Los Angeles, and his doctorate in engineering design from Tufts University. In addition, he is the author of three books and numerous peer-reviewed articles.
“His body of work is exceptional,” says UM-Flint Chancellor Ruth Person. “He brings with him a wealth of academic experience that will be essential to moving our university forward as we begin our next phase of strategic planning for the future.”
During his professional career as both a university administrator and faculty member, Voland secured millions of dollars in funding for both research and educational initiatives. He led his college through a highly successful accreditation process, and significantly increased the number of full-time faculty.
“I look forward to serving as the University of Michigan-Flint’s next provost,” Voland says. “Moreover, I am eager to join the university’s leadership team as we work to expand the vital impact of UM-Flint on students, faculty, staff and the community.”
He will begin his duties on July 1.
