Earth Day celebration call for events

Forty years ago U-M held an Environmental Teach-In that drew 15,000 participants including such notables as Gordon Lightfoot, Barry Commoner, Edmund Muskie and Ralph Nader. The event, which occurred in March 1970, helped focus national attention to the first Earth Day that occurred a month later, April 22, 1970.

This year the university will mark the 40th anniversary of Earth Day and celebrate U-M’s commitment to sustainability with a variety of events sponsored by student organizations and campus units, occurring throughout March and April.

The University Record will publish a comprehensive calendar of Earth Day events in the March 8 issue. If your unit plans to host an event related to sustainability, the environment, ecology or a related topic, sign up to enter the event at www.ns.umich.edu/htdocs/r_events/signup.php.

When entering the information, write “Earth Day:” in the event title box, followed by the event title.
