Faculty workload and other work life issues continue to be a concern on this campus as on many campuses across the country.
To measure progress made at U-M on these issues, a new survey of tenured, tenure-track and contingent U-M faculty is currently in the field. The Faculty Work Life Study, sent in January to a sample of faculty on the Ann Arbor campus, asks questions about faculty activities, attitudes and perceptions of the work environment.
The majority of the questions are from the Association of American Universities Survey allowing U-M to compare its data with peer institutions. Questions also are included from an earlier survey conducted in 1996 by the Center for the Education of Women (CEW), which will enable examination of changes in faculty experiences over the years.
CEW expects that findings from the new Faculty Work Life Study will provide a sound basis for recommendations to improve academic careers and working conditions here on campus.
The study is expected to be of interest to other campus constituencies such as the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching, Human Resources, and the Medical School, and will address areas of interest to the Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs, the President’s Advisory Commission on Women, the Lecturers’ Employee Organization and faculty groups.
