The university has begun a benefits audit designed to ensure that the individuals enrolled as dependents in U-M medical plans are qualified for coverage. Announced in September 2009 (www.ur.umich.edu/0910/Sep14_09/01.php), the audit includes all faculty, staff and fellowship holders with one or more enrolled dependents.
Letters sent from Chapman Kelly Inc., the external auditing firm conducting the eligibility review, will arrive this week at home addresses. About 20,000 U-M employees cover at least one adult or child dependent, and each employee must respond to the Chapman Kelly letter with copies of specific documents to verify the eligibility of dependents.
The types of documents required will vary based on the category of adult or child dependent and will include items such as copies of federal tax returns with Social Security numbers (SSN) and income figures removed, birth certificates and additional options. No form of documentation will require SSN, but documentation must be provided by April 28 in order to continue uninterrupted coverage for dependents.
