Awards

Assistant Professor Jason McCormick has been awarded the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Faculty Fellowship. Each year AISC selects a promising young university faculty member as the AISC Faculty Fellow. He will receive a monetary award of $30,000 per a year over four years mainly to fund research.

Professor William Fulton, the Oscar Zariski Distinguished University Professor of Mathematics, M.S. Keeler II Professor of Mathematics and professor of mathematics, LSA, has received the 2010 American Mathematical Society Leroy P. Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement. Presented annually by the AMS, the prize is one of the highest distinctions in mathematics.

Professor Robert Griess has received the 2010 American Mathematical Society Leroy P. Steele Prize for a Seminal Contribution to Research. Presented annually by the AMS, the prize is one of the highest distinctions in mathematics.

Clay Scott, assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science, College of Engineering, and assistant professor of statistics, LSA, recently received a National Science Foundation Career Award for his project that investigates guided sensing algorithms that will be used in data-gathering problems.

Elected

Alec Gallimore, Arthur F Thurnau Professor, professor of aerospace engineering, College of Engineering, and associate dean for Academic Programs and Initiatives, Rackham Graduate School, has been elected an American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics fellow. The AIAA awards the distinction of fellow to members who have made notable and valuable contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology of aeronautics or astronautics.

Named

Dr. William Giannobile, a professor of dentistry at the School of Dentistry and director of the Michigan Center for Oral Health Research, has been named editor-in-chief of the Journal of Dental Research. The monthly magazine is a major peer-reviewed scientific journal of the International Association for Dental Research, an organization with nearly 11,000 members worldwide.
