Dr. Carol Kauffman, chief of infectious diseases at the Veterans Administration Ann Arbor Healthcare System and professor of internal medicine in the Medical School, recently was presented the Great Internists of Michigan award by the Michigan chapter of the American College of Physicians. The award recognizes physicians who have demonstrated outstanding clinical abilities and performance along with service to the discipline, research and/or education. Kauffman’s clinical and research interests include the diagnosis and treatment of fungal infections, especially in immunocompromised patients, and prevention and treatment of infections in older adults.
Nikolaos Chronis, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and assistant professor of biomedical engineering, College of Engineering, has been selected to receive a National Institutes of Health Director’s New Innovator Award. The award program provides $348 million to encourage investigators to explore bold ideas that speed the translation of research into improved health. Chronis’ research project focuses on biochips for point-of-care HIV/AIDS diagnosis in the developing world.
