Items missing from residence hall room
A Markley Hall resident returned to her room Sept. 13 to find several items missing, police reports state. The woman and her roommate reported that they had left the hall around 9:40 a.m. and thought they had secured their room door. When they returned about an hour later, they discovered clothes and other personal items were missing. There were no signs of forced entry.
Textbooks reported stolen in summer
A student reported to the Department of Public Safety (DPS) that two textbooks valued at $400 had been stolen from his room in July or August when he was living at Markley Hall. He indicated that he believed access to his room had been gained through an open window. Since nothing else was taken at the time of the occurrence, he didn’t report the theft, but said he now needed a police report in order to purchase more textbooks. The case has been closed.
Pinckney camp building damaged
A building at a U-M camp near Pinckney was broken into this summer. On Sept. 3 a caretaker conducting a property check found two broken windows, paint splashed on furniture and walls, and hand-written messages. No items appeared to be missing. The case has been closed.
Missing clothes recovered
Two Bursley Hall roommates reported to police that several hundred dollars of clothing had been taken from their room Sept. 26. During the investigation, police determined that an overnight guest of one of the roommates may have taken the clothes. The suspect subsequently returned the stolen property. Results of the investigation have been turned over to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office for authorization of arrest charges.
Truck taken from arena lot
A Ford F250 pick-up truck was reported stolen Sept. 10 from a parking lot near Crisler Arena. The truck was owned by a contract employee working in Plant Operations.
Fondling incident under investigation
A staff person working in Randall Laboratory told police she had been inappropriately touched by a researcher around 9 p.m. Sept 2. The DPS investigation is continuing.
Prosecutor closes sexual assault case
A resident of Vera Baits Houses reported to DPS that she had been sexually assaulted by an acquaintance Sept. 1. The campus visitor was apprehended in a nearby parking lot where he was found sleeping in his car. Following the investigation, the prosecutor’s office denied authorizing an arrest warrant as the woman told police she did not want to pursue criminal charges.
DPS, AAPD capture thieves
On Sept. 25, Ann Arbor Police Department officers (AAPD) arrested four non-affiliated visitors from Flint who were using credit cards at Ann Arbor retail stores that had been reported stolen from the University Hospital the previous day. Additional property recently reported stolen from other campus buildings was recovered as well. One of the men led AAPD officers on an extensive foot chase, including into Community High School, before he was caught. In addition to AAPD charges, the 30-year-old suspect has been charged with seven felony counts in connection with thefts from U-M buildings.
