The following items were approved by the Board of Regents at its July 17 meeting.
Renovations planned at LSI for electron microscopy
A new suite will be created from unfinished space at the Life Sciences Institute (LSI) to support three new cryo-electron microscopes that will provide high-resolution specimen images free of the distortion traditional electron microscopy may cause. The $1.8 million project will be funded by LSI, the Medical School and the Office of the Provost, and is scheduled to be completed next spring.
Cabins at Camp Davis to be replaced
A $1.35 million project will replace 16 cabins at the Camp Davis Rocky Mountain Field Station located south of Jackson Hole, Wyo., and operated by the Department of Geology. Infrastructure upgrades will allow the new cabins to be usable beyond the summer months. LSA resources will pay for the replacement, which is scheduled to be completed next summer.
Information technology upgrades planned
The networking infrastructure at the School of Dentistry building and the W. K. Kellogg Institute will be upgraded to provide high-speed wired and wireless access. The $4.5 million project will be funded from University investment proceeds and is scheduled to be completed in summer 2010.
New chiller planned for MLB plant
The chilled water plant at the Modern Languages Building will be expanded to support the North Quad Residential and Academic Complex currently under construction. The $3.4 million project will be funded from General Fund and Utility resources and is scheduled for completion next summer.
Michigan Wrestling Center receives approval for bids
The Board of Regents gave authorization to issue the Michigan Wrestling Center project for bids and award construction contracts. The new center will address the need for larger practice areas, team facilities and support space for the wrestling program. Department of Athletics resources and gifts will fund the $5.5 million project scheduled for completion next fall.
Bids to be issued for new UMHHC Data Center
The planned data center to be constructed on North Campus for the U-M Hospitals and Health Centers (UMHHC) received final approval. When completed in the spring of 2010, the new facility will provide needed additional data center capacity in a tornado-resistant structure with backup power, cooling and water supplies to allow continuous operations. UMHHC funds will be used for the $50.9 million project.
Property purchases approved
The University will purchase an apartment building at 953 Wall Street in Ann Arbor, contiguous to other U-M property, for the negotiated purchase price of $790,000. A vacant lot of less than an acre at 1059 Wall Street, located contiguous to other U-M property, also will be purchased for the negotiated purchase price $162,600.
Lease for Dearborn Child Development Center relocation approved
Regents approved the relocation of the U-M-Dearborn School of Education‘s Child Development Center to the Oakwood Rotunda Center in Dearborn under an 18-year lease from Oakwood Healthcare Inc. The Child Development Center currently is located in a modular building and three historic Henry Ford Estate cottages on the Dearborn campus. The new location will help support the long-term collaboration between the University and Oakwood Hospital’s Program for Exceptional Children also located at the Rotunda Center.
Ground lease approved to Humane Society of Huron Valley
The University will lease approximately 5 acres of vacant land in the Matthaei Botanical Gardens adjacent to the present Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) facility to allow HSHV to expand its operations. The Matthaei family, original donors of both the U-M and HSHV property, lent their support and approved removal of the deed restriction on the U-M parcel to allow the 65-year lease in support of the HSHV mission to provide animal welfare services.

Retirements
Vincent Castagnacci, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and professor of art in the School of Art and Design, effective May 31. He joined the University in 1973. Castagnacci’s abstract work in painting, printmaking and drawing has been centered in the principle of variational development. His works have been exhibited in the United States and abroad.
John Drach, professor of dentistry in the School of Dentistry and professor of medicinal chemistry in the College of Pharmacy, effective Aug. 31. He joined U-M in 1970. His research focused on the discovery, mode of action and metabolism of antiviral drugs. From 1985-95, he served as interim chair and then chair of the Department of Biologic and Materials Science.
W. John Judd, professor of immunohematology, Department of Pathology, Medical School, effective Aug. 31. Judd joined the University in 1974. From1975-2007, he served as director of the American Association of Blood Banks Regional Blood Bank Reference Laboratory at U-M. He has 75 peer-reviewed publications, many review articles and chapters in books.
Georgette Zirbes, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and professor of art in the School of Art and Design, effective May 31. She joined U-M in 1972. She has maintained a distinguished career as a ceramics artist with a lengthy record of national and international exhibitions. Her works can be found in permanent collections of museums in the United States, Germany, China, the Czech Republic, Russia, Latvia and Hungary.
