Lab updates for Med Sci II
Laboratory space for the Medical School‘s microbiology and immunology department will be modernized when the sixth level of the Medical Science Unit II building is renovated. Approximately 4,000 gross square feet of space, built 40 years ago, will receive state-of-the-art upgrades including infrastructure improvements. The Medical School will provide the $1.6 million funding and the Architecture, Engineering and Construction department will design the project. Construction is scheduled to be completed in winter 2009.
Geology lab updates for new faculty
Three faculty members in the Department of Geological Sciences will share a new trace metal and geological science laboratory after renovations on the third level of the C.C. Little Science Building are completed next summer. Approximately 3,500 gross square feet of space will be upgraded to create the new lab. LSA will fund the $1.25 million project budget. The Architecture, Engineering and Construction department will provide the design.
Power plant’s water system to be upgraded
The water supply treatment system at the Central Power Plant, which supplies low-pressure steam for heating and cooling buildings on the Central and Medical campuses, will be upgraded. Once the project is completed in winter 2009, the process of producing steam will be more energy efficient and will use less water and fewer chemicals. Engineering firm Black & Veatch will design the project. Utility resources will fund the $1.55 million project budget.

Retirements
Amiya Hajra, professor of biological chemistry and research professor, Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience Institute, effective Aug. 31. He joined U-M in 1960. He has contributed substantively to the knowledge of the function of brain lipids. In 1988 he won the Javits Award of the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke.
