Photo: Persian Visions opens Sept. 29 at UMMA Off/Site

Yahya Dehghanpoor’s ‘Untitled’ is from the UMMA Off/Site exhibit Persian Visions: Contemporary Photography from Iran, opening Sept. 29. Persian Visions introduces the work of 20 artists, revealing a thriving, sophisticated artistic culture of range and depth that is almost unknown to American audiences, in the first survey of contemporary Iranian photography to be presented in the United States. Their work undermines Western stereotypes of a much-mythologized and misunderstood culture, while at the same time refusing to offer a consistent alternative. The artists explore aspects of cultural, gendered and individual identities in Iran at the beginning of the 21st century. (Photo by Yahya Dehghanpoor)
