Anything might show up at the Hatcher Graduate Library for the annual public Preservation Clinic: a pair of hand-colored 19th-century photo portraits framed in glass domes, artwork accidentally run over by a car or a photo album coated in mold.

The 2014 winners of the Center for the Education of Women’s Carol Hollenshead Award for Excellence in Promoting Equity and Social Change are Kathleen Donohoe, associate director of human resources for policy, and Dorceta Taylor, professor of environmental sociology.

Sharon Glotzer elected to National Academy of Sciences

Sharon Glotzer, the Stuart W. Churchill Professor of Chemical Engineering, is among the most recent inductees to the National Academy of Sciences. Her induction was announced Tuesday. Membership in the NAS is one of the highest distinctions for a scientist or engineer in the United States.

Society of Fellows names new members

The Michigan Society of Fellows has selected six new fellows out of 1,027 applications to serve three-year appointments as postdoctoral scholars and assistant professors, beginning this fall. 

The seventh, Chelsea Wood was selected in 2012-13 and deferred her start date until 2014.

Campuses, units to celebrate Spring Commencement

General Motors Co. Chief Executive Officer Mary Barra will deliver the Spring Commencement address for the Ann Arbor campus at 10 a.m. Saturday at Michigan Stadium.

Barra, who became the first female CEO of a major automaker in January, will receive an honorary Doctor of Engineering degree.

Grant specialist stays active, gives back

When was the last time that you biked 50 miles? 100? 300 miles? For Brenda Phillips, U-M Health System grant specialist, long-distance bike rides are just a part of her routine — another way to stay healthy.

"Biking — it's a great way to stay active, and it's a great way to get places," she laughs.
