Volunteers sought for Spring Commencement

To help make Spring Commencement a special memory for 2014 graduates and their families, volunteers are needed to pass out programs, answer questions and more.

The Office of University and Development Events is looking for volunteers to help, mostly during the morning hours at the May 3 event. Volunteers receive a T-shirt to wear to the ceremony along with a concession voucher for a food item and beverage, and a parking pass. They also will be able to see and hear General Motors CEO Mary Barra’s commencement address.

Benjamin Rosebrock, Beyond the Diag program manager, has volunteered for various events hosted by UDE the past three years. He became aware of volunteer opportunities when his partner began working with the office in 2011.

“I enjoy volunteering because it offers the ability to attend a variety of events. Often, I am given the opportunity to interact with people that I would have not otherwise met. I am the type of person who will appreciate an event more if given a task to complete, so volunteering helps me feel connected and engaged in the events,” Rosebrock says.

His volunteer service at Spring Commencement has included managing the tunnel entrance for the platform party for university leadership and honorary degree recipients, and working with the transportation/shuttle bus service after commencement.

“The UDE staff create this positive experience by making volunteers feel welcomed and part of the team. The staff do an excellent job in providing the volunteers with the materials and resources necessary to complete their jobs accurately, while creating a fun atmosphere,” Rosebrock says.

Most volunteer shifts are from 7:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Michigan Stadium. Volunteers are entered in a drawing to win one of two prizes — four tickets each to a 2014 fall U-M football game — or one of 20 $25 gift cards to Ann Arbor businesses.

Other volunteer tasks include helping handicapped or limited-mobility guests find their seats; educating and helping guests dispose of their waste into landfill, recycling or compost bins at eco-friendly waste stations; and helping guests at area hotels find the shuttle bus to Michigan Stadium.

I regard the opportunity to be a volunteer in the Spring commencement as my big pleasure! I hope it is not too late to apply.
