The following items were approved by the Board of Regents at its June 18 meeting.
Addition to G. G. Brown planned
An addition of approximately 66,000 gross square feet to the George Granger Brown Memorial Laboratories is planned that will house laboratories and faculty and graduate student offices for the Department of Mechanical Engineering‘s efforts in emerging research areas such as bio-systems, energy systems and nano-systems. The architectural firm of Perkins+Will, in association with Integrated Design Solutions, will design the $56 million project, which is expected to be funded from College of Engineering resources, gifts, university investment proceeds and other sources.
Kresge Complex to be demolished
The seven buildings that comprise the Kresge Complex at the corner of Ann Street and Zina Pitcher Place are slated for demolition. Outdated and at the end of their useful lives, the facilities now stand vacant after renovation projects at various Medical School facilities allowed occupants to be relocated. After demolition, the site will be restored with landscaping, sidewalks and lighting. The Medical School will fund the $9.7 million project that is scheduled to be completed in the winter of 2011.
Final approval for addition to Engineering Programs Building
The regents authorized issuing the Engineering Programs Building Addition project for bids and awarding construction contracts provided the bids are within budget. The $4.8 million project will construct a 10,000-gross-square-foot addition for the Wilson Student Team Project Center. College of Engineering resources will fund the project that is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2010.
Richner next chairman of Board of Regents
Andrew Richner was elected as the next chairman of the Board of Regents. Richner, a Republican from Grosse Pointe Park and currently the vice chairman, will serve the one-year term beginning July 1. He was elected to the board in 2002. Richner is a partner in the law firm Clark Hill PLC. Julia Donovan Darlow, a Democrat from Ann Arbor, was elected vice chair. She was elected to the board in 2006.

Retirements
Everett Blakely, associate professor of social work in the School of Human Education and Human Services, UM-Flint, effective May 31. Blakely joined the university in 1986 and served as psychiatric consultant for the Saginaw Community Mental Health. He served as chair of the UM-Flint Academic Plan Monitoring Committee and worked closely with students as adviser for the Social Work Club and the Social Work Honor Society.
Dr. Mary Ellen Bozynski Hernandez, professor of pediatrics and communicable diseases and professor of medical education, Medical School, effective June 30. She joined U-M in 1984 and directed the follow-up clinic at C.S. C. S. Mott Children’s Hospital. Bozynski Hernandez was elected to the Society for Pediatric Research and the American Pediatric Society. In 2007, she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award in Medical Education by the Medical School.
Morton Brown, professor of biostatistics, School of Public Health, effective May 31. Brown joined the university in 1981 and worked extensively developing research methods for analysis of hormone data. Brown pioneered a capstone course for master’s degree students considered a key element to the success of the program. He was the principal investigator on two National Institutes of Health-funded multicenter networks as well as serving as the director of the data-coordinating center for other trials.
Theodore Ramsay, professor of art, School of Art & Design, effective May 31. Ramsey joined U-M in 1965. He has worked with a number of artistic media including drawing, printmaking, painting, and a combination and digital and traditional techniques. He co-authored an art-education textbook and serves on executive committees across the university including committees for the U-M Museum of Art and School of Art & Design.
Alan Tsai, associate professor of human nutrition, School of Public Health, effective May 31. Tsai joined the university in 1973 and has focused his research on creating nutritional assessment tools for the elderly to address long-term health issues. He has authored or co-authored 51 publications and taught a number of courses vital for both the human nutrition degree program and the human nutrition dietetics program.
Amy Whall, professor of nursing, School of Nursing, effective May 31. She joined U-M in 1985 with research interests focusing on geriatric nursing and dementia care. She has been a faculty associate at the Institute for Gerontology since 1993 and served as the associate director for nursing at the U-M Geriatrics Center for many years. Whall also served on the universitywide Medical Affairs committee and in 2001 received an award from the Fulbright International Scholars Program.
Gail Winger, research professor, Department of Pharmacology, Medical School, effective March 31. Winger joined the university in 1975 with research focusing on the effects of drug abuse on rhesus monkeys. She has published more than 100 papers and co-authored a book. She served three terms on the Medical School Advisory Committee on Primary Research Appointments, Promotions, and Titles, which she chaired in 1978.
