Two robberies reported last week

Two off-campus robberies were reported to the Ann Arbor Police last week involving University students.

In both cases, the victims reported giving the perpetrators money, who then fled without further incident. The Ann Arbor Police later indicated they were considering the two incidents connected and warned University students not to walk alone at night.

Just after midnight Sept. 10, a student told the police he was approached from behind by an unknown man who pressed something cold against his back and demanded money. The victim gave the man money and the suspect fled. He is described as possible a white male about 6 feet to 6 feet 4 inches wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt and black warm-up pants.

On Sept. 7 a student told the police that as he sat on the porch at his residence on Oakland Street, near East University and Arch Street, an unknown man approached him, brandished a handgun and asked for his wallet. The suspect fled on foot after the student gave him money. The suspect is described as a white male, 30 years old, 6 feet 3 inches and about 195 pounds. He last was seen wearing a grey t-shirt, jeans and a black baseball hat.

Anyone with information about either of these incidents is asked to call the Ann Arbor Police Department at (734) 997-1366 or their Tip Line at (734) 996-3199.

Burglar caught

A 34-year-old Ann Arbor man pleaded guilty Sept. 3 to two charges in connection with an Aug. 13 burglary at North Hall. Michael Steinkirchner was charged with breaking and entering of a coin-operated machine and larceny in a building. An additional charge of fraudulent use of a financial transaction device was dropped by the prosecutor.

Steinkirchner had been discovered in the Army ROTC cadet lounge near an open vending machine door. While a cadet called DPS from his cell phone, the suspect left the building. A responding police officer located the suspect walking along Washtenaw Avenue and Steinkirchner was arrested without incident. He is accused of stealing money, Army medals, electronic equipment and other assorted property.

Tickets taken at football game

A 54-year-old father from Williamston reported to DPS Aug. 30 that his football tickets had been stolen by an unknown man, who then fled on foot. The victim and his son were near the corner of Stadium Boulevard and Main Street after having just purchased two tickets at the Crisler Arena ticket window to the game with Utah. The victim told police an unknown white man had walked up to him, hit him in the face, then yanked the tickets out of the victim’s hand and fled. The man sought treatment for hand injuries with the emergency medical staff at the game.

Assault report not valid

A charge of filing a false police report has been authorized by the county prosecutor’s office against a 21-year-old Ann Arbor man after he told campus police he and a companion had been stabbed by an unknown man Aug. 14. The two men were found on the top level of the Thompson Street parking structure after the Ann Arbor man called DPS to report his assault. Both men were found with cuts on their arms. They reportedly had been stabbed on Liberty Street and had fled to the structure. One man was taken to the U-M Hospital for treatment.

The ensuing investigation determined the incident did not occur as or where it had been reported. The wounds may have been self-inflicted. Filing a false police report carries a penalty of up to four years in jail and/or a fine of $2000.

Property returned

A painting, silver serving bowls and other pieces of property anonymously were returned following a burglary Aug. 15 at the President’s Residence. The president was not at home at the time of the incident and entry may have been made through an unsecured window. The returned property was found undamaged in bags placed outside a residence door Aug. 19. DPS had no suspects at the time of this publication.

Abandoned moped missing

A student returning to campus told DPS that his moped had been stolen. He had secured it to a bicycle rack near Angell Hall in May. When he returned Aug. 29, it was no longer there. Officers checked records with DPS and the Ann Arbor Police and determined that it had not been impounded due to abandonment.

Patient assaults family, staff

A 28-year-old U-M Hospital patient was reported to have struck his mother, sister, responding nurse and hospital security officer Aug. 25 after learning he would remain in the hospital the following day, which was his birthday. Medical treatment was provided to the nurse for facial injuries, but none of the other victims sought treatment. The case was closed because none of the victims wanted to pursue charges.
