Infant’s mother arrested

A 21-year-old mother of a 6-week-old infant was observed June 7 in C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital smothering the infant with a pillow for more than a minute. The woman was arrested and has been charged with attempted murder and first-degree child abuse. The infant was taken into protective custody after being released from the hospital. The woman remains in jail on $50,000 cash bond awaiting her preliminary exam July 23.

Gun pointed at two teens

Two teenage girls told DPS officers June 24 that as they were walking on the Diag at about 1:30 p.m. the previous day, they observed a man brandish a black pistol at another man walking in front of them. Then the man walked toward the girls, pointed the gun at them and verbally threatened them before putting the gun in his waistband as he walked away, they said. The girls had waited until the next day to tell an adult, who promptly called police.

The man is described as a white man, 18-25 years old, 5 feet 7 inches tall with broad shoulders and dirty, short, blonde hair. He was wearing a black and white baseball cap; a black, zippered sweatshirt; a white T-shirt with green and blue writing on the front; and black sweatpants.

Items taken from Markley

A laptop computer and two iPod devices were reported stolen June 28 from a Mary Markley residence hall room. The two residents told police they thought they had closed their locked door when they left the room earlier in the afternoon. The room was vacant from about 4-6:45 p.m. when one resident returned to find the door open and the items missing. There were no signs of forced entry.

Would-be robber thwarted

A 20-year-old student told police he had pushed an unknown man to the ground at about 4:30 a.m. June 23 when the man tried to take his money. The student said he was walking south on Tappan Street from the Shapiro Undergraduate Library, when he saw a man, who appeared to be homeless, leaning against a fence smoking a cigarette. When the student neared the suspect, the man pushed the student and demanded his money. After pushing the man back, the student fled on foot. After relating the incident to a relative two weeks later, the student called DPS to report the incident.

Stolen truck recovered

A U-M dump truck was recovered after a brief chase with Ann Arbor Police June 24 that concluded on the U-M Golf Course. Police had attempted to pull over the speeding truck, but the driver fled through local streets and eventually drove across the golf course. Soon, the driver exited the vehicle and was apprehended at about 3 a.m. after a brief foot chase. The 28-year-old Ann Arbor driver, who is not affiliated with the U-M, was arrested for operating while intoxicated third offense, fleeing and eluding police, receiving and concealing a motor vehicle, resisting and obstructing a police officer, and operating while license revoked. The truck is owned by U-M Athletics.

Arsonist arrested

A 19-year-old Albion man was arrested June 17 in connection with setting fire to a kiosk on the east side of Randall Lab. The fire was put out by the Ann Arbor Fire Department. All fliers posted on the kiosk were destroyed and smoke damage was observed on the kiosk.
