U-M alumna and pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Alexa Canady and a panel of health providers will speak during an Oct. 5 reception for the ongoing exhibit “Opening Doors: Contemporary African American Academic Surgeons.”
The traveling exhibit, which celebrates the contributions of black academic surgeons to medicine and medical education through contemporary and historical images, is sponsored by the Health Sciences Libraries.
Canady, who is featured in the display and earned both her undergraduate and medical degrees from U-M, is known for her “patient-care first” approach to practice.
During the reception Canady will deliver the keynote address and a panel of health providers will discuss overcoming challenges to achieve their present positions.
“Opening Doors” tells the stories of four pioneering black surgeons and educators who excel in their fields and believe in continuing their journeys through educating and mentoring younger physicians and surgeons, event organizers say.
The exhibit will be on display at the Taubman Medical Library through September and in October it will move to the Gallery (Room 100), Hatcher Graduate Library.
The event is co-sponsored by M-Library Diversity Committee, UMHS/HR Diversity Network; and the Medical School Diversity and Career Development Office. “Opening Doors” was developed and produced by the National Library of Medicine and the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture.
