New deans at sustainability, public policy schools; interim at SMTD

The Board of Regents approved deans for the new School for Environment and Sustainability and the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy on Thursday, along with an interim dean for the School of Music, Theatre & Dance.

Jonathan T. Overpeck, one of the nation’s leading experts on climate change, was appointed the inaugural dean of the School for Environment and Sustainability. The position carries the title Samuel A. Graham Dean.

His five-year appointment is effective Aug. 14. Overpeck also was appointed a professor of environment and sustainability, with tenure, in the new school. Read more about Overpeck’s appointment.

Michael S. Barr will be the new Joan and Sanford Weill Dean of Public Policy at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy. His five-year appointment is effective Aug. 1.

Barr is the Roy F. and Jean Humphrey Proffitt Professor of Law in the Law School and a professor of public policy in the Ford School. Read more about Barr’s appointment.

Melody Lynn Racine, senior associate dean for academic, faculty and student affairs at the School of Music, Theatre & Dance, will step in as interim dean of the school, effective Aug. 16. Read more about Racine’s appointment.
