New chair selected for Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology

Dr. M. Bishr Omary was appointed chair of the Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology at the June 19 Board of Regents meeting, effective Aug. 1.

Omary comes to Michigan from the Palo Alto VA Medical Center and the Stanford University School of Medicine. At the VA, he’s part of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He also serves as associate director of the Stanford University Digestive Disease Center.

Omary is a world leader in the field of keratin biology and pathobiology of organ systems. His work extends beyond the clinical areas of gastroenterology and hepatology to include basic epithelial biology.

He has written more than 120 original articles for leading scientific journals, has authored several reviews and book chapters, and has edited several books. He serves as associate editor for both Molecular Biology of the Cell and Gastroenterology.

“Even with all of his impressive accomplishments,” says Dr. James Woolliscroft, dean of the Medical School and Lyle C. Roll Professor of Medicine, “I have been particularly struck by his engaging, outgoing personality and his dedication to mentoring junior faculty and students.”
