A suspect was arrested March 21 at an Ann Arbor jewelry store as he tried to sell many of the gemstones that had been stolen from the C.C. Little Building the previous weekend.
Michael Sherer, 27, of Saline remains in jail awaiting a preliminary exam on April 2 for charges of breaking and entering as well as receiving and concealing stolen property. His bond is set at $100,000.
Sherer reportedly attempted to sell several gemstones March 19 at Abracadabra on East Liberty Street. He was told he would have to leave the stones so they could be appraised. Two days later, he returned to the store to reclaim the stones, but a store employee recognized the stones from photographs of the missing U-M property and called the police.
When Department of Public Safety officers executed search warrants on Sherer’s car and his Eastern Michigan University residence, they recovered all 68 gemstones taken from C.C. Little as well as other stolen items.
