The scientific and medical challenges of stem cell research and related ethical and policy issues are topics of an upcoming discussion on “The Promise of Embryonic Stem Cell Research.”
The talks, which will be followed by a question-and-answer session, will take place during the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies Regional Meeting, 4:30-6 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Biomedical Sciences Research Building Auditorium.
The event, which is open to the public, is co-hosted by the Office of President Mary Sue Coleman and Dr. Harvey Fineberg, president of the Institute of Medicine.
Lawrence Goldstein, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator and director of the University of California San Diego Stem Cell Program, will speak on scientific and medical challenges and opportunities for human embryonic stem cell research.
Jonathan Moreno, the David and Lyn Silfen University Professor at University of Pennsylvania and senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, will discuss ethical and policy issues.
Sean Morrison, director of the Center for Stem Cell Biology, will moderate the question-and-answer session.
