The Exhibit Museum of Natural History will celebrate Charles Darwin’s 200th birthday and the voyage of the Beagle as it presents the 12th annual Identification Day from noon-5 p.m. Feb. 15.
The public is invited to learn about the importance of natural history collections from curators and collection managers. Visitors are encouraged to bring in natural history treasures and mystery artifacts, and U-M curators, collection managers, scientists and other regional experts will help describe, name and properly label them.
Experts from the fields of paleontology, anthropology, archaeology, botany, zoology and geology will help identify shells, rocks and minerals, invertebrate fossils, arrow heads, shards of pottery, vertebrate bones, insects, skulls, seeds, leaves, twigs, and fish. No appraisals will be given.
The event also will include student artwork highlighting the 150th anniversary of the publication of Darwin’s “On the Origin of Species.” Birthday hats and cake will be provided at 3:30 p.m.
