Public health disasters forum

Experts in public health, disaster preparedness and ethics will lead a public discussion about resource allocation during times of panic, turbulence and scarcity. The Ethics in Public Life Initiative Forum is from 7-8:30 p.m. Nov. 28 at the Ann Arbor District Library multipurpose room.

The President’s Ethics in Public Life Initiative and the Ann Arbor District Library present the forum. While public health disasters come in many forms, from Hurricane Katrina to the 9/11 attacks to SARS, all such events bring with them a sudden increase in health needs.

Authorities must determine: Who should be vaccinated first if a pandemic strikes? Should stockpiling of supplies be permitted by those other than public or community health organizations? Who receives scarce intensive care beds or in extreme scarcity any medical treatment at all? How should such decisions be made, and by whom? And how will Americans react to being told to wait their turn?
