A new season of Distinguished University Professor lectures gets underway Jan. 28 as the first of five faculty members who have received one of the University’s top honors will present topics that highlight their work at U-M.

In a tradition that began seven years ago, recently appointed DUPs give an inaugural lecture, typically during the first or second full year of their appointments, although this year one presenter is an honoree from 2005.

The lectures all will be presented at 4 p.m. in Rackham Amphitheatre. A reception follows each presentation.

The University Record will present a preview of each lecture, beginning in this issue with the first presenter, Donald Lopez Jr., who will lecture Jan. 28. In 2005 Lopez was named the Arthur E. Link Distinguished University Professor of Buddhist and Tibetan Studies, Department of Asian Languages and Cultures, LSA.

Other presenters are:

• Feb. 16 — Joyce Penner, named in 2007 as the Ralph J. Cicerone Distinguished University Professor of Atmospheric Science in the Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences in the College of Engineering.

• March 25 — Hyman Bass, named in 2008 as the Samuel Eilenberg Distinguished University Professor of Mathematics and Mathematics Education, LSA. He also is a professor of mathematics education in the School of Education.

• April 1 — Yu Xie, named in 2007 as the Otis Dudley Duncan Distinguished University Professor of Sociology, LSA.

• April 14 — Jane Dutton, named in 2007 as the Robert L. Kahn Distinguished University Professor of Business Administration and Psychology, LSA. She is also a professor of organizational behavior, human resource management, corporate strategy and international business in the Stephen M. Ross School of Business.

Distinguished University Professorships, established in 1947, recognize full or associate professors for exceptional scholarly and/or creative achievement, national and international reputation, and superior teaching skills. Each professorship bears a name determined by the appointive professor in consultation with her or his dean.

Recipients get an annual salary supplement of $5,000 and an annual research supplement of $5,000.
