Dell was selected by a cross-functional team composed of representatives from the Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint campuses as well as Michigan Medicine. The team is collectively responsible for nearly 90 percent of the university’s computer hardware spend.

The evaluation and selection process was undertaken as part of U-M’s ongoing effort to partner with suppliers that offer cost savings and outstanding customer service to the university community.

“U-M’s new contract with Dell — based on previous spending trends — is expected to save the university $1 million annually on computer hardware expenses,” said Tony Burger, director of financial analysis and procurement services.

“In addition to significant annual savings, Dell offers a variety of other benefits to U-M, including enhanced catalog functionality, lead-time guarantees when placing orders, a faster build process, better warranties, and customization options.”

Procurement Services, Information and Technology Services and Health Information Technology & Services have been working closely with Dell to ensure a smooth transition.

U-M also has a dedicated team from Dell to help with the transition and customer service. ITS (including MiWorkspace and Tech Shop), HITS and other campus units have already started contacting local areas regarding their specific computer hardware needs.

“Our main focus is ensuring that the move to Dell is as seamless and easy as possible for the university community,” said Bob Jones, ITS executive director of support services. “We’re looking forward to partnering with Dell because the company has significant expertise in higher education and offers a broad selection of computer hardware to meet U-M’s diverse educational, research, and patient-care needs.”

The new Dell catalog will be available Jan. 18 in M-marketsite. Until then, the HP catalog can be accessed in M-marketsite.
