Two UM-Dearborn master’s programs to launch this fall

The University of Michigan-Dearborn will launch two new master’s programs: a Master of Science in Engineering degree program in human-centered design and engineering, and a Master of Science in Engineering degree program in robotics engineering. The program in Human-Centered Design and Engineering will make the university one of the few places in the country — and the only in the region — to offer the degree. Students in the new 31 credit-hour program can expect cross-college coursework in engineering, art and design, marketing, and even human psychology. The new 30 credit-hour Master of Science in Engineering degree program in robotics engineering gives students the chance to dig into several emerging robotics disciplines, including autonomous vehicles, drones and other flying robots, and the component systems that make them all work.

Michigan Medicine honored as one of America’s best employers

Michigan Medicine was recently named one of America’s best employers by Forbes. Forbes compiled the list in collaboration with analytics firm Statista, based on an independent survey of more than 30,000 U.S. employees working for companies employing at least 1,000 people. The employees were consulted not via their employers but anonymously through several online panels. The respondents were asked to rate, on a scale of zero to 10, how likely they would be to recommend their employer to others. Michigan Medicine was ranked fourth among all companies in Michigan. School of Education offering new minor

The School of Education now offers a new undergraduate minor called Education for Empowerment. Students who pursue this minor will examine the critical role of education in building the capacity to advance democracy and justice in society. School of Education Dean Elizabeth Birr Moje said that, through the minor, students can “learn new ways that they can make an impact in the community through informal education, policy work, international teaching, coaching and leadership and community engagement.” The minor requires a minimum of 15 credit hours.
