Award

Sarah Wilcox, a graduate student instructor in the School of Art & Design, was presented Oct. 26 with the 2007 Neubacher Award from the Council on Disability Concerns for her work to develop a computer interface for disabled artists and her participation in disabilities studies and conferences, along with other related activities. The award is named for Jim Neubacher, an alumnus of the University who was a columnist for the Detroit Free Press and an advocate for equal rights and opportunities for people with disabilities. Also honored were 16 winners of Certificates of Appreciation for helping others and raising consciousness about disability issues: Kathleen Atkins, Christopher Casteel, Barry Dunietz, Darren Jorgensen, Helen Meador, the Mott Family Network Assistive Technology Commission, Dr. Elisabeth Quint, Martha Reck, Alice Roelofs, Lawrence Schneider, Stephen J. Schwartz, Dr. Robert Sitrin, Jeffrey Steiger, Perry Titus, Health System Public Relations and Marketing, and Sarah E. Watkins

High energy physicist Matthew Bowen, physics research associate and Michigan Center for Theoretical Physics member, is the new American Physical Society Congressional Fellow for 2007-08. Bowen, who completed his graduate study at the University of Washington in 2006, will spend the next year broadening his congressional experience through direct involvement with the legislative and political process.

Elected

Paula Allen-Meares, dean of the School of Social Work, has been elected to the board of the New York Academy of Medicine. Founded in 1847, the academy improves the health of people living in cities, especially the disadvantaged and vulnerable populations, through research, education, community engagement and evidence-based advocacy.
Professor of Medicinal Chemistry Jim Coward recently was elected to the Hall of Fame of the American Chemical Society, Division of Medicinal Chemistry, in recognition of “overall outstanding contributions to medicinal chemistry.” Coward holds joint appointments at the School of Pharmacy and the Department of Chemistry, LSA.
