2014 Best Doctors list features hundreds of UMHS physicians

As further proof of the U-M Health System’s reputation for outstanding patient care, nearly 500 U-M physicians have been named by their peers to the 2014 Best Doctors in America List.

The new national list includes 493 U-M physicians — and places them among the best 5 percent of doctors in their specialties. UMHS has more physicians recognized than any other health system in Michigan.

The list is compiled every year by Boston-based Best Doctors Inc., and based on an in-depth survey, the list contains more than 53,000 U.S. physicians in 40 specialties and more than 400 subspecialties of medicine.

In a confidential review, current physician listees answer the question, “If you or a loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, to whom would you refer?”

This yields a preliminary set of doctors who meet the initial criteria for inclusion. These physicians are then checked for credentials, disciplinary actions and clinical activity. Only doctors who meet all evaluation criteria are selected for the list.

In all, more than 1,700 faculty physicians treat patients at UMHS hospitals and health centers. All of them are U-M Medical School faculty members and belong to U-M’s Faculty Group Practice.

The Best Doctors database of physicians is used by members and their families to seek expert medical resources and guidance. Access to the full database is provided through employer-based benefit plans.

Best Doctors was founded in 1989 by two physicians affiliated with Harvard Medical School, whose goal was to provide greater access to dependable, high quality medical information and care for individuals with serious illness and injuries.

This is not surprising to me at all. I’ve been using U of M Physicians since 1995 and I have come to find that the University of Michigan Health System is second to none!

My first grandson was born without a 4th heart chamber. When he was 4 days old Dr. Ohye did open heart surgery on him and saved his life! At 4 months old he performed the second open heart surgery and bypass. My grandson will have one more surgery at 2 years old and hopefully live a long and happy life. Dr. Ohye is truly an instrument of God! My grandson is like a normal boy and is the joy of our life! The staff at U of M are all truly remarkable and deserve recognition. They all care intensely about all the patients at the hospitals…very loving and caring and I can’t find the words to express our appreciation on saving not just my grandsons life but many, many people who go there! Thank you for your wonderful “gift” from the bottom of our hearts!
