Michigan Athletics lost one of its longtime former employees when retired public and media relations director Jim Schneider died July 21. Schneider worked with the football, baseball and ice hockey programs during his 30 years with the athletic department.
Maureen Elizabeth Kelley Belden, a former clinical instructor at the School of Nursing, died July 4 after a long illness. She was 51.
Dr. Stefan S. Fajans, 96, died June 22. He was active professor emeritus of Internal Medicine, Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology & Diabetes, and was recognized nationally and internationally as a distinguished endocrinologist and leader in his specialty of diabetes.
Natalia "Natasha" Andronova, a research scientist in the Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences, died Sunday after a battle with brain cancer.
Glenn Frederick Knoll, professor emeritus of nuclear engineering and radiological sciences, has died.
Leonard Kimball Eaton, emeritus professor of architecture, died April 1 at the age of 92.
He was born Feb. 3, 1922, in Minneapolis, Minn. He was the son of prominent lawyer Leo K. Eaton and Elizabeth Barber Eaton. He excelled as an intercollegiate swimmer at Williams College and graduated in 1943 as a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
Dr. Patrick Gibbons, an adjunct clinical instructor in the Department of Psychiatry as well as a widely known and respected addiction psychiatrist, died March 26 after a brief illness.
Russell A. Fraser, Austin Warren Professor Emeritus of English, died March 10 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was 86.
Hunein F. “John” Maassab, professor emeritus of epidemiology at the University of Michigan School of Public Health and developer of the nasal-spray influenza vaccine FluMist, died Feb. 1 in North Carolina. He was 87.
LaRue T. Hosmer, professor emeritus of corporate strategy at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business, died Feb. 23 at the age of 86.
Emeritus Professor of History Stephen J. Tonsor III, of Chelsea, formerly of Ann Arbor, died Jan. 8 at the Chelsea Retirement Community, Towsley Village. He was 90 years old.
James (Jerry) Lyle Miller Jr., a professor emeritus of higher education at the University of Michigan, died Nov. 4, 2013, in Concord, Calif.
Dedicated student, educator, physician and family supporter, George Henry Koepke died Nov. 26, 2013. He was the first child born on Jan. 1, 1916, in Toledo, Ohio. Gust and Louise (Kutz) Koepke were his parents. His wife, Helen K. LaBoiteaux Koepke, a younger brother, Dr. Charles Koepke, and son-in-law, Lloyd Bunting, preceeded him in death.
Katalin “Kathy” Berdy, who formerly worked as the Latino/a coordinator for the Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs Office, died Jan. 3. She was 53.
She will be missed by many, including her dear companion, John Everett.
William Russell Anderson, emeritus professor of botany, died Nov. 2 at the age of 71.
Rolf Arnold Deininger, professor emeritus of environmental health sciences in the School of Public Health, died at his home in Ann Arbor on Nov. 1. He was 79.
Vern Terpstra, professor emeritus of international business, died Nov. 6. He was 86 years old.
Curtis E. Huntington, professor and associate chair of mathematics, died Oct. 7 after a four-year battle with cancer.
The University of Michigan field hockey team will honor former Wolverine coach and U-M women's athletics pioneer Phyllis Ocker with a commemorative patch affixed on their uniforms for the remainder of the 2013 season. Ocker died Aug. 23 at the age of 87 in Ellensburg, Wash.
