School of Music

Eero Saarinen, who designed the School of Music, became ill and died before the school’s completion in 1964, the year this photo was taken. Saarinen watched construction from his room in University Hospital. The building brought together school activities that had been spread over 13 buildings. Saarinen had created a design plan for North Campus, but the School of Music (now the School of Music, Theatre & Dance) was the one building he wanted to create personally. This week in history (105 years ago)

A body of students braved the cold and deep snow to race down the railroad tracks to the Ann Arbor train depot to see Commander Robert E. Peary, who reached the North Pole the previous April. Outside the train station, they chanted “We want Peary.” Upon seeing Peary coatless through the door, one student yelled, “Come on out, it’s cold enough out here!” Peary came out and shook hands with the crowd. When the train left the depot, the crowd cheered him.
