University launches United Way fundraising campaign

Topics:

Faculty, staff, students, retirees and volunteers can improve the lives of their neighbors through the U-M United Way Charitable Giving Campaign.

Campaign co-chairs Cynthia H. Wilbanks, vice president for government relations, and T. Anthony Denton, chief operating officer and acting chief executive officer of U-M Hospitals and Health Centers, are challenging U-M colleagues to raise $1.5 million by Dec. 31.

United Way-supported agencies help community members who need it most. Some examples are:

• Access to a quality pre-school for hundreds of underprivileged children.

• Families that obtain assistance to cover the costs of needed health care.

• An elderly man who needed housing, substance-abuse treatment, employment assistance and medical care.

Those interested can give through the ePledge on the Faculty/Staff page of Wolverine Access, in the upper-right announcement section. A pledge form also is available on the U-M United Way website.

People who pledge are eligible for a weekly prize drawing. Those who give $1,000 or more become members of the Leadership Givers Association. They will receive an invitation to the annual reception hosted by President Mark Schlissel.

People also can make pledges to other non-profits of their choice or give to the United Way Community Investment Fund. The fund works with the Ann Arbor Community Foundation, the city of Ann Arbor, and Washtenaw County to identify the most pressing needs in our community. Funds go to programs and organizations that are proven to be effective in addressing these prioritized needs.
