Michigan Tech receives $2.3M donation

Alumnus Dave House and the House Family Foundation recently donated $2.3 million to Michigan Technological University for endowed professorships and graduate student assistantships. The funding has named the Dave House Endowed Professorship in Computer Science and the Dave House Endowed Professorship in Statistics, Data Mining and Data Analytics. The $2 million will support the endowed professorships, while $270,000 will fund three graduate assistants in Michigan Tech’s new Master of Science in Data Science program for three years as they contribute to Tech’s Alliance for Computing, Information and Automation Research Center.

Wayne State awarded $1.9M NIH grant for bacteria research

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health recently awarded a five-year, $1.9 million grant to Wayne State University’s Michael Rybak, professor of pharmacy practices in the university’s Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health and adjunct professor of medicine in the School of Medicine. The research project focuses on life-threatening infections caused by enterococci bacteria in hospital settings, which are antibiotic-resistant. The grant will further research of treatment options.

WMU receives grants to improve aviation safety

Western Michigan University’s College of Aviation has received three grants from the Federal Aviation Administration NextGen Weather Technology in the Cockpit program, totaling $434,690. The grants will be used study weather information systems to improve aviation safety and reduce accident risk, funding three Federal Aviation Administration projects that explore the use of technology in facing adverse weather conditions.

Harvard’s Belfer Center receives $15 million gift

Harvard University recently received a $15 million investment from Robert and Renée Belfer and their son Laurence. The gift will advance the work of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard Kennedy School. It will launch the new Cyber Security Project, which aims to create resources to face cyber threats to U.S. national security.

Northwestern partners with Chicago for city improvement

Northwestern University and the city of Chicago have joined forces in an agreement that outlines $455 million in economic and educational improvements in Chicago over the next three years. This agreement explores partnerships with Chicago Public Schools and City Colleges of Chicago through the Good Neighbor, Great University initiative. The partnership also will provide business opportunities and improve communities.
