Michigan Tech receives $2M gift for mechanical engineering

Alumnus Richard Henes recently donated $2 million gift to Michigan Technological University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics. The donation follows a $2 million gift Henes made to the school’s physics department earlier this year. The gift will fund an endowed faculty position, faculty and department development, and student development. Henes graduated from Michigan Tech in 1948.

WMU Osher Institute receives $1M endowment

Western Michigan University’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute has received a $1 million endowment from The Bernard Osher Foundation. In addition, the foundation awarded a $50,000 bridge grant representing the anticipated amount of interest the endowment will generate over coming years. The gift will set up an endowment in support of the community effort to offer courses and trips to area residents.

OU receives $5M commitment for business and athletics

Oakland University has received a $5 million commitment from alumni Craig and Ann Stinson for the School of Business Administration and the Department of Athletics. The gift will enhance the Stinson Student Advancement Center in the business school, as well as name the Stinson Family Student-Athlete Development Center in Athletics. The university has previously received gifts totaling more than $530,000 for the School of Business Administration from the Stinsons.

University of Maryland to dedicate art-sociology building

The University of Maryland will officially dedicate the Art-Sociology Building on campus as the Parren J. Mitchell Art-Sociology Building. The naming is dedicated in memory of the late congressman and civil rights leader. Mitchell was the first African American to obtain a graduate degree from the University of Maryland, in 1952. He represented the seventh congressional district of Maryland from 1971 until 1987.

UCLA receives endowment for real estate education

The UCLA Ziman Center for Real Estate has received a $1 million donation from Los Angeles real estate entrepreneur Steven Gordon. The gift will establish the Steven C. Gordon Real Estate Endowment. Funds will be allocated for curriculum development, real estate case competitions, distinguished speakers series, professional mentoring, career services, and related activities. The donation is part of the $4.2 billion UCLA Centennial Campaign.
