Creating a thriving, healthy workplace culture where people can be their best happens one department, unit and school at a time.

Now through the end of July, MHealthy is recruiting faculty and staff members to serve as MHealthy Champions within their work area.

“Our network of Champions plays an important role in bringing a healthier atmosphere to the workplace,” says Leola Hearing, project specialist for MHealthy. “The ideal Champion is a faculty or staff member who is enthusiastic about health and well-being, likes to positively motivate others, and will support and encourage participation in MHealthy programs and services.”

Currently, more than 350 employees across the university’s three campuses and the Health System served as Champions and have the opportunity to:

• Work with an MHealthy coordinator to tailor health and wellness activities that best fit the needs of their coworkers.

• Help to achieve their department’s or unit’s health goals.

• Communicate opportunities and encourage participation in healthy activities.

• Be recognized personally for their contributions and gain recognition for their department.

“My department has taken small steps that my colleagues have welcomed and appreciated,” says Jessica Whipple, an MHealthy Champion and administrative assistant senior in the Epidemiology Department at the School of Public Health.

“For example, we looked at our meetings and events where food is served and began offering healthier options. Also, on any given day you are likely to see one of several small walking groups at SPH.”

Champions serve a two-year term and spend approximately two hours per month on their responsibilities.
