FASAP is now Faculty and Staff Counseling and Consultation Office

As the university begins a new century, the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program begins serving the university community with a new name — the Faculty and Staff Counseling and Consultation Office.

This name was chosen to better reflect the office’s core services, says Tom Waldecker, director of the newly-named office.

For 40 years, our office has provided professional counseling to U-M faculty and staff, helping them build resiliency and face challenges,” says Waldecker. “So, we thought it was about time for ‘counseling’ to officially be part of our name.”

The office provides free-of-charge, confidential counseling and consultation services to support the mental and emotional well-being of U-M faculty and staff.

In addition, the office provides educational support programs on topics such as parenting of teens, divorce and relationship break-ups, new moms, post docs and more. The office also works with units to offer grief education sessions and counseling during stressful situations.

Mental health counseling and consultation services are part of U-M’s health and well-being services and reflect the university’s philosophy of personal well-being. That philosophy embraces the concept that well-being encompasses the whole person, with many factors affecting one’s quality of life.
