Exterior repairs on Michigan Union may begin this week

A $1.4 million project to repair approximately 12,000 square feet of deteriorated masonry on the exterior of the Michigan Union is getting underway.

“Staging preparation, ivy removal and cleaning the facade may be starting as early as this week,” said Susan Pile, senior director, University Unions & Auxiliary Services.

“Scaffolding will also be constructed next week on the east side of the building (State Street) for tower repairs. As scaffolding is put in place, minor disruptions to the east entrance may occur. Wayfinding signage will direct guests. All functions within the Union — meetings, events, eateries and other services — will operate as normal throughout the repair work.”

Exterior work includes brick and stone repairs and repointing at the building tower. The installation of new flashings to prevent future masonry deterioration is also planned. The work, approved by the Board of Regents in April, is expected to be completed by the fall.

“Inspections during the review of the Michigan Union found that exterior repairs need to be made in order to maintain the building and protect the beautiful architectural features,” Pile said. “The most significant work will be on the tower. The remainder will be done in sections and be completed by fall.”

The Michigan Union was constructed in 1919, with additions built in 1930, 1937 and 1957.  The Union has long been a vibrant center for student involvement, serving as home to student organization offices and activity spaces, meeting and special event spaces, dining and retail establishments, and Student Life services and resources.

“All of the exterior work is being done with historic preservation in mind. The Michigan Union is an iconic feature of our beautiful campus and we are dedicated to ensuring that its graceful presence can be enjoyed for generations to come, ” Pile said.

With the exception of initial rerouting while scaffolding is built, all entrances will be accessible and there will be no impact on parking from this project.

“Union staff will work closely with community members who host events in the union — including weddings, receptions and milestone occasions — to ensure a successful event,” said Pile.

The scope of this project includes the architectural, electrical, and mechanical work necessary to accomplish the improvements.

Funding for the project is provided through Student Life resources. The architectural firm is Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. The project is expected to provide an average of five on-site construction jobs.
