New journal presents sustainability research

The Michigan Journal of Sustainability is making sustainability research information accessible and useful to a broad range of readers. The second issue of this online open-access journal is available at sustainability.umich.edu/mjs. MJS is managed by a team of sustainability doctoral fellows. It offers peer-reviewed articles written to be easily understood by practitioners and concerned citizens. This latest issue includes content about climate adaptation, public health and sustainable urban planning. The editorial board encourages readers to submit content for review and possible publication.

U-M-Flint, Grand Blanc High launch Early College

The Grand Blanc Community Schools in partnership with the University of Michigan-Flint will launch the Grand Blanc Early College in Fall 2015. Designed to prepare motivated students for the rigors of higher education, it will allow students to earn college credit as they attend high school. Initially, up to 50 students will be admitted. Students commit to a five-year high school and college experience. Junior and senior students will take high school and college classes on the campus of Grand Blanc High School. They transition to the UM-Flint campus during their fifth year of Early College.

UM-Dearborn Formula SAE team places high in competition

The UM-Dearborn Formula Society of Automotive Engineers racing team made a strong showing at the recent annual Toronto Shootout. The competition hosted by the University of Toronto Formula SAE team involves a day of autocross. The team placed fourth out of 17, beating teams from Cornell University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, among others. UM-Dearborn driver Trent Brown placed fifth out of 51 drivers. SAE International organizes the competition in which students design, manufacture and build formula-style race cars.

Reminder: Staff excellence award nominations due Friday

The Office of the Provost established the Candace J. Johnson Award for Staff Excellence in 2004 as a memorial to an exemplary staff member who is a positive influence in the workplace. All regular staff members of the Ann Arbor campus and Health System are eligible. Nominations for the award are due Friday.
