New Flint program meets health care reform demands

The UM-Flint has created a new interdisciplinary program to meet the rising demands of healthcare reform. The Health Navigator minor and certificate program will prepare students to connect patients to services to help prevent injury and illness. Health Navigators work in hospitals, health clinics, human service agencies and insurance companies. They work with patients to simplify the health system and health insurance, access services they need and are eligible for, and educate clients on overall health. The 18-19 credit-hour program is available as a minor, and as a certificate to non-degree seeking students. It begins in fall 2014 and can be completed in one to two years.

Faculty member elected to police committee

David A. Moran, clinical professor of law, has been re-elected to the Police Department Oversight Committee for a two-year term beginning this month. The committee receives and makes recommendations regarding grievances against any police officer deputized by the university. The six-member oversight committee is comprised of two student members, two faculty members (one senate and one non-senate faculty), and two staff members (one union and one non-union), who are nominated and elected by their peers for two-year terms. Moran, the re-elected non-Senate faculty representative, began his term April 1. For more information, go to the Police Department Oversight Committee website at hr.umich.edu/umpd.
