U-M recognized for supporting employees

For the third consecutive year, the University of Michigan has been recognized for creating a positive workplace experience for faculty and staff through benefits, work-life programs and other resources and policies. U-M is one of 160 employers in the United States and Canada, and one of 23 higher education institutions, to receive the 2017 Seal of Distinction from the nonprofit HR association WorldatWork. The recipients were evaluated on several criteria, including health and wellness, compensation, time off policies, flexible work arrangements, community involvement and employee recognition. Staff urged to volunteer for MStaff200

The MStaff200 bicentennial event planning committee invites staff members to volunteer by Feb. 28 to share their talents, service interests or photos at the June event. MStaff200 will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. June 27 on the Diag and Ingalls Mall. All active, temporary and retired staff members on the Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint campuses and at Michigan Medicine are invited. Staff members’ family members, students, faculty and members of the community are also welcome. Those who want to get involved can apply by Feb. 28 to share their creative talents or community service interests, or submit their best original photos of staff at work for the MStaff200 bicentennial calendar photo contest. SACUA expresses support for statement on international community

The Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs approved a resolution Jan. 30 expressing its strong support and appreciation of President Mark Schlissel’s recent statement, “Protecting the interests of our international community of scholars.” In the resolution, SACUA members said they stand with Schlissel in “upholding the core values of higher education and an inclusive society.” Schlissel’s statement said the university is committed to protecting the rights and opportunities currently available to members of its academic community, and to do whatever possible within the law to continue to identify, recruit, support and retain academic talent from all over the world.

Abstracts requested for Health Professions Education Day

Members of the health professions education community are invited to submit abstracts for poster presentations for Health Professions Education Day, which will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 13 at the Michigan League Ballroom. The deadline for abstracts is Feb. 17. The annual event aims to spark interprofessional collaboration, networking and inspiration for future research and practice for educational efforts across the health professions schools at U-M. Nominations for three awards that recognize excellence among research faculty are due Feb. 17. The awards are the Collegiate Research Professorship, the Research Faculty Achievement Award and the Research Faculty Recognition Award. Projects across state get more than $2M in funding for biomedical innovation

More than $2 million in funding has been awarded to 11 project teams by the Michigan Translational Research and Commercialization for Life Sciences Innovation Hub. The hub is co-managed by the University of Michigan Medical School and Office of Research with funding from U-M and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. Projects from across the state were selected for funding by the innovation hub team to accelerate their paths to market, bringing them one step closer to helping patients and their families. Projects include an innovative coating for joint replacements to a promising drug for scleroderma, a painful inflammatory disease. Finalists for the funding, including teams from U-M, Michigan State University, Michigan Technological University, Beaumont Health System and Henry Ford Health System, presented proposals to the MTRAC Oversight Committee at their annual meeting in January.
