Department of Learning Health Sciences helps launch journal

The University of Michigan Department of Learning Health Sciences has spearheaded the launch of Learning Health Systems, an international, open access, peer-reviewed journal. The goal of the journal is to advance the interdisciplinary area of learning health systems. The journal’s founding editor is Charles Friedman, Josiah Macy Jr. Professor of Medical Education, chair and professor of learning health sciences in the Medical School; professor of information, School of Information; and professor of health management and policy, School of Public Health. U-M partners with Air Force Research Laboratory

A team of researchers led by Joaquim Martins, professor of aerospace engineering, College of Engineering, has been selected for a highly competitive research partnership with the Air Force Research Laboratory. This collaboration, which spans five years and starts in the fall, establishes U-M as an AFRL Collaborative Center in Aerospace Vehicle Design. This partnership will promote collaboration between the laboratory, U-M and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the discovery of new numerical methods and tools for optimizing aircraft design and performance.

U-M startup pilots $10 grocery rides for Detroiters

Cart, a U-M startup that connects people to healthy, fresh groceries, will offer $10 round-trip rides via Lyft through March 22 at Detroit Meijer stores. Meijer is donating the other $10 it costs per ride. Customers who live within five miles of the stores, located at 1301 W. 8 Mile Road and 21431 Grand River Ave., can order the rides and will be picked up from their homes. U-M strengthens collaborations with China

The university will collaborate with Chinese institutions to advance research, development and deployment of new transportation technologies and cutting-edge innovations. S. Jack Hu, vice president for research, signed a research agreement with Didi Chuxing, China’s largest rider-hailing company, to develop scholarships and innovations related to the share economy. The nearly $1 million, three-year joint research program focuses on transportation optimization, big data, artificial language learning and artificial intelligence. U-M has also signed a memorandum of understanding with Tus-International and TusStar, and finalized an agreement to establish the Global Collaboratory in Advanced Manufacturing with the Beijing Institute of Collaborative Innovation and Peking University. Funding for the five-year, $25 million partnership will be provided by the Beijing Institute.

Senate Assembly passes resolution on demotion

The faculty’s Senate Assembly on Jan. 23 approved a resolution stating any reduction to an individual faculty member’s base academic salary constitutes a demotion, and should entitle that person to university due process provisions under the Board of Regents bylaws. The resolution had been put forward by the Academic Affairs Advisory Committee and was endorsed by the Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs, the faculty governance system’s executive committee.
