University of Michigan Health System researchers and community partners are embarking on a project to increase acute stroke treatment rates in Flint with the help of a five-year, $2.5 million grant from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. Flint has the lowest acute stroke treatment rate of any community of its size in the country. Lesli Skolarus, associate professor of neurology at the Medical School, will lead the team, which is testing a hospital- and community-based intervention called the “Stroke Ready” program.  The program will attempt to address delays that can occur before and after arrival to hospitals and reduce the likelihood of stroke treatment and lessen its effectiveness.
