UM-Flint partners with local schools on new early childhood center
The University of Michigan-Flint, Flint Community Schools and the Genesee Intermediate School District are partnering to provide space, programming and fiscal oversight for Cummings Great Expectations, a new early childhood center for children across Flint. Cummings will identify and address the educational, behavioral and health needs of Flint children ages 2 months to 5 years, with a particular focus on those who were exposed to lead as a result of the city’s water crisis. The center will also be a resource hub for parents, families and other home- and center-based child care providers. A ribbon-cutting ceremony recently took place in honor of the center’s opening. UM-Flint, which operates an early childhood education center on its campus, is providing the same program and services at Cummings. Among the center’s sources of financial support, the state is providing $2.2 million this year to cover the costs of student attendance.
Record email, print publication reduced over Thanksgiving
Wednesday’s University Record email will be the last one sent until Nov. 30, as the Record’s online and print editions will take a break over the Thanksgiving holiday. There will be no print edition of the Record on Nov. 28. It will return Dec. 5, and the final print edition of the semester will be Dec. 12. Daily email delivery will resume Nov. 30 and continue until the end of the semester. Major faculty or staff news that occurs over the holiday may be posted to the Record’s website.
Regents meeting set for Dec. 8
The Board of Regents will have its monthly meeting at 3 p.m. Dec. 8 in the Anderson Room, Michigan Union. To offer public comment at the meeting, sign up in advance at regents.umich.edu/meetings/publform.html. Public comments on agenda items will be taken prior to their consideration. Comments on non-agenda items will follow the regular business agenda. Nominations sought for Office of Research staff recognition awards
The Office of Research is accepting nominations from all three U-M campuses for the annual Research Administrator Recognition Award and the newly created Research Technical Staff Recognition Award. The Research Administrator Recognition Award honors distinguished service to the research community on campus over a number of years. The Research Technical Staff Recognition Award honors research staff members who have, independently or along with faculty, advanced the research mission of their unit in a way that extends beyond the ordinary fulfillment of a position’s duties. Applications sought for Humanities Collaboratory development grants
The Humanities Collaboratory invites faculty teams to apply for proposal development grants to fund collaborative project development during the spring term. Led by faculty in Ann Arbor, all teams must be intergenerational, including collaboration with other faculty, undergraduate and graduate students, librarians, postdoctoral fellows or curators. Proposal development funding supports the development of projects and culminates in an application for project funding.
