UMHS recognized as one of 50 greenest hospitals in U.S.

The University of Michigan Health System was recognized as one of the 50 greenest hospitals in the U.S. Becker’s Hospital Review created the rankings by looking at awards offered by Practice Greenhealth, the U.S. Green Building Council, the American Society for Healthcare Engineering and the Environmental Protection Agency. UMHS recently received the Greenhealth Partner for Change award from Practice Greenhealth. Becker’s commended UMHS for requiring major construction projects to meet LEED Silver level of certification.

SMTD’s William K. and Delores S. Brehm Pavilion gets LEED Gold honor

The William K. and Delores S. Brehm Pavilion at the School of Music, Theatre & Dance has received LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a green-building certification program that recognizes facilities for being energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable. The installation of energy-efficient HVAC systems, wall and roof insulation, reduced lighting power density and other measures are designed to reduce energy costs by around 40 percent. Half of the on-site generated construction waste was diverted from the landfill.

Doll family endows Center for Entrepreneurship director position

Venture capitalist and U-M alumnus Dixon Doll and his wife, Carol, gave $2 million to endow the executive director position for the Center for Entrepreneurship at the College of Engineering. The position is named the Dixon and Carol Doll Executive Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship. Dixon Doll received his Master of Science in electrical engineering and a Ph.D. from U-M in 1965 and 1969, respectively. Carol Doll, a U-M alumna, received her bachelor’s degree in speech and a teaching certification in 1965. Dixon Doll is a renowned venture capitalist and recognized by many as one of the “Fathers of the Silicon Valley.” He founded the Accel Partners telecom fund in the mid-1980s, followed by Doll Capital Management.

More new students, strong retention rate at UM-Dearborn

A historically large freshman class, strong first-year retention and significant growth in new graduate student enrollment are among the highlights from UM-Dearborn’s fall 2016 enrollment report. Freshman enrollment has jumped more than nine percent to 1,074 students, marking the largest freshman class in nearly 40 years. The first-year retention rate increased from 80 to 82 percent. UM-Dearborn’s retention rate is almost 20 percent higher than the national rate for public universities. New graduate student enrollment increased more than 13 percent to 620 students, and total graduate enrollment grew by 6.8 percent to 1,990 students.

UM-Flint launches elementary math education grad program

UM-Flint will launch a new Master of Arts in mathematics education for elementary and early childhood educators this summer to help prepare current teachers for a stronger instructional foundation of basic mathematics for preschool and elementary-aged children. Professional math educators with doctoral degrees will lead the program and teach proven, research-based strategies that graduate students can use in their classrooms to help young kids develop mathematical mindsets that build on the basics. Online and face-to-face classes in small cohorts will be offered in the program.
