Merchant joins University Record as staff writer

Safiya Merchant

The University Record recently welcomed Safiya Merchant as its new staff writer. Born and raised in Chicago, Merchant majored in journalism and international studies at Northwestern University after graduating from Chicago Public Schools. During her time at Northwestern, she interned as a crime and community reporter for several publications, including the San Antonio Express-News, the Chicago Sun-Times and The Seattle Times. After graduation, she spent a year as a community reporter at a newspaper in the Chicago suburbs. She then moved to Michigan and spent almost two years as an education reporter in Battle Creek before coming to the University of Michigan. ‘Blood Battle’ between U-M, Ohio State continues this month

The 35th annual Blood Battle will run through Nov. 23, pitting U-M against The Ohio State University to unite students, faculty, staff and the Ann Arbor community to save lives and extend the rivalry beyond the football field. As part of this year’s battle, on Oct. 30, donors gave 416 units of blood, the largest one-day blood drive on the U-M campus. To donate, visit the American Red Cross website, redcrossblood.org, and use the sponsor code “goblue” to learn more about the Ann Arbor area drives. Over the past 34 years, U-M has collected enough to blood to potentially save more than 644,000 people.

Academic Women’s Caucus accepting nominations for awards

The Academic Women’s Caucus is accepting nominations for the 2017 Sarah Goddard Power and Rhetaugh G. Dumas Progress in Diversifying awards from the university community. Nominations for both awards are due Nov. 30.

To qualify for the 2017 Sarah Goddard Power Award, a candidate should have made significant contributions to the development of the status of women at U-M in addition to demonstrating exceptional leadership, notable scholarship or significant professional accomplishments. The 2017 Rhetaugh G. U-M hospitals, health centers earn top grades in patient safety

The U-M hospitals and health centers have earned an A on the fall 2016 Hospital Safety Score for its dedication to patient safety. The national report card, issued by the Leapfrog Group, ranks hospitals nationwide by how well they keep patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors. U-M is one of 72 hospitals nationwide that have earned straight A’s on the ranking since 2012.

Time change reminds employees to update passwords

Information and Technology Services reminds employees to change their UMICH (Level-1) passwords in light of the start of Daylight Saving Time. ITS recommends changing passwords every six months. To update passwords, visit password.it.umich.edu.

Poverty research grants available for U-M researchers, partners

Poverty Solutions at U-M and the Detroit Community-Academic Urban Research Center are offering grants to support research centered on studying and improving Michigan policies and other efforts that seek to prevent and alleviate poverty. Grants will be given for partnerships between U-M academic researchers and community-based partners in the state. Up to four grants worth up to $25,000 will be offered, and applications must be received by 11:59 p.m. EST on Nov. 21. Grants will begin Jan. 16 and end Jan. 15, 2018.
