Laura Smith

Laura Smith, assistant professor of physical therapy and coordinator of the orthopedic post-professional certificate and residency program, School of Health Professions and Studies, UM-Flint, received the Faculty Award from the Midwest Interprofessional Practice, Education, and Research Center. Smith currently serves as lead faculty on the “IPE 101” intro module available to students on all three U-M campuses. The award recognizes her scholarship, mentorship and demonstrated ability to “empower colleagues and students to engage in interprofessional learning and collaborative practice.”

Three University of Michigan faculty members recently received the Demonstration Model Award from the Midwest Interprofessional Practice, Education, and Research Center. They earned the award for creating the IPE Course Adapter Toolkit, a web-based resource that serves as a “one-stop shop” for instructors interested in converting their existing courses to interprofessional offerings. The center bestows awards annually for best practices in “collaborative, innovative, and interprofessional initiatives across disciplines, learning institutions, and health care systems.” The U-M recipients were: Melissa Gross, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, associate professor of movement science, School of Kinesiology, and associate professor of art and design, Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design; Debra Mattison, clinical assistant professor of social work, School of Social Work; and Minal Patel, John G. Searle Assistant Professor of Health Behavior and Health Education and assistant professor of health behavior and health education, School of Public Health.
