Luke Shaefer, associate professor of social work and public policy, and director of Poverty Solutions, has been awarded the Society for Social Work and Research’s 2017 Book Award for his book, “$2 a Day: Living on Almost Nothing in America.” This award recognizes outstanding social work contributions that advance knowledge with direct applications to practice, policy and the resolution of social problems.

Nancy Benovich Gilby

Nancy Benovich Gilby, Ehrenberg Director of Entrepreneurship, adjunct clinical associate professor of information, and research investigator in the School of Information, has received the Michigan Council of Women in Technology Foundation’s Woman of the Year in Technology Award. She is the first-ever recipient of the honor. Benovich Gilby, an entrepreneur with 10 successful high-tech startups, was nominated by students and local entrepreneurs whom she has coached, mentored, advised and taught. The award recognizes women in Michigan who are leading or driving change for other women in information technology careers or fields of study.

Cynthia Wilbanks, vice president for government relations and special adviser to the president, Office of the President, has been selected as the 2017 Woman of the Year by Women United, formerly the Women’s Leadership Initiative, of the United Way of Washtenaw County. Wilbanks will be honored at the United Way’s “Power of the Purse” event March 15 at the North Campus Research Complex. Wilbanks was chosen by the Power of the Purse planning committee for her exemplary leadership role in the community and her continued dedication to strengthening Washtenaw County.
